There are certain things you expect from a hotel. A bed, for example. Maybe breakfast. With a little luck, some good coffee. But it’s rather rare to expect a stream winding its way through a playroom, prompting children to balance on footbridges, wade through reeds, and explore their surroundings with the earnestness of little explorers.
At the Familotel Schreinerhof in Schönberg, the story of this new indoor play area begins right here. A blue water feature forms the design backbone of the facility, connecting different play areas into a cohesive adventure landscape. It winds along fall-protection surfaces, marks shoreline zones, links gathering spots, and almost casually guides attention from one play concept to the next. Black locust walkways span the imaginary body of water, while staggered wooden rounds create small crossings that are about as interesting to children as a path is to adults when it explicitly states that you’re not supposed to walk on it. Here, children balance, experiment, turn things around, and try again. Movement arises not from instructions, but from curiosity. This is a distinction that is often underestimated in modern playground design. Good spaces do not constantly explain themselves. They offer hints and leave the rest up to the children.
One of the most delightful activities of childhood is undoubtedly disappearing. This is immediately followed by reappearing—ideally in a place where no one would expect it. For this reason, a shaped hill with a crawl tunnel was created in the center of the playground. This arched tunnel gives children the chance to slip away from the visible world for a short while. A few moments later, they reappear—usually in good spirits and accompanied by other children who also want to know where the mysterious path actually leads. The whole area is guarded by three beavers. Not three real ones, of course. Real beavers would probably request changes to the structural design and then start rearranging the furniture. Instead, handcrafted carved figures mark the central meeting place of the playground. “See you at the beavers’” is likely to quickly establish itself as one of the facility’s most important guiding phrases. The surrounding wall design incorporates motifs from the forest and water and integrates them permanently into the architecture. This creates an atmosphere that doesn’t look like a decorated play area, but rather like a space that was designed from the very beginning specifically for this purpose.
As a playground equipment manufacturer, we place special emphasis on ensuring that design and function are not viewed separately. A high-quality finish must be just as durable as the playground equipment itself, and a compelling story must never come at the expense of practicality in everyday use.
The second area of the project is characterized by a rocky stream that divides the play area and connects various activity zones. Built on this natural foundation, a small climbing area was created that offers children the opportunity to practice balance, coordination, and agility. The focus here isn’t on setting spectacular height records or achieving peak athletic performance. It’s about something much more important: taking the next step. And then another one after that. Good play spaces often consist of a series of small successes. Along the path, a marble run invites children to experiment. The facility is complemented by a musical instrument and a cooperative memory game, which offer children additional opportunities to play together. Soft mushroom sculptures and a large tree deliberately create calm focal points in the space. They serve as seating, jumping-off points, or simply as places for a short break between two big expeditions. A fountain forms the atmospheric centerpiece of the scene and reinforces the water motif as a unifying element of the entire facility. Balustrades with integrated ropes run along the elevated edges and create additional play opportunities. Crawl tubes expand the movement paths to include further small adventures. The playground culminates in a forest slide that blends harmoniously into the landscape and concludes the circuit in the most enjoyable way possible: with momentum.
With the creation of “Biberland” at the Familotel Schreinerhof, a high-quality indoor playground was built that combines physical activity, imagination, and a pleasant environment. This project exemplifies how well-thought-out playground design, durable playground equipment, meticulous woodwork, and the expertise of a specialized playground manufacturer can come together to create a play world that goes beyond individual pieces of equipment to function as a cohesive experiential space. In other words, a playground that isn’t just played on, but is meant to be discovered—again and again.
